What is a Bong Bowl?
A bong bowl, also known as a slide or bowl piece, is a key removable part of a bong.
It sits in the joint of your downstem, holding the dry cannabis flower in place for you to light up, and is pulled out when you’re ready to clear the chamber.
Often shaped like a funnel, the bowl typically has one big or some small holes at the bottom. Once the dry herb is lit and the smoke is pulled through the bottom holes to water chamber, creating a smooth and clean hit.
Every bong needs a bowl of some sort to properly function. Without a bong bowl, there’s no basis for either combustion or filtration.
Bowls come in every shape and size imaginable, crafted from different materials such as ceramic, quartz, metal, or glass, and decorated with carvings or other artistic touches.
How to Choose the Right Bong Bowl for You?
Bowls come in every shape and size imaginable, crafted from different materials such as glass, ceramic, metal, or silicone, and decorated with carvings or other artistic touches.
Choosing the right bowl can significantly impact your smoking experience. The perfect bowl boils down to three things: size, material, and style.
1. Size
Ensure that the size of the bowl matches the joint size of your bong. This is crucial for creating a tight seal and making a smooth airflow.
The bong bowls size is measured by the diameter of the stem protruding from the bottom of the bowl.
The size is typically 10mm, 14mm and 18mm. 10mm and 18mm bowls are less common, with 14mm bowls more popular.
Generally, 14mm bowls are standard among small to medium sized water pipes, while 18mm bowls are normally used on larger smoking bongs.
If you’re not sure, take a dime out and measure; 14mm bowls are smaller than a dime, while 18mm bowls are slightly larger. If it’s significantly smaller than a dime, you’re likely dealing with a 10mm joint.
2. Gender
Bowls can be either male or female. Consider whether a male or female bowl based on your bong’s joint gender.
Male bowls fit into female joints, while female bowls attach to male joints.
3. Material
Bong bowls are typically made of glass, but they can also be made of other materials like quartz, ceramic, metal, or silicone. Each material brings its own unique set of benefits to the table.
Glass: Glass bong bowls are a popular choice due to their pure taste, aesthetic appeal, easy to clean and maintain.
Glass is non-porous, meaning it won't interfere with the taste of your herb, and their transparency allows you to track combustion and resin buildup in real-time.
Plus, borosilicate glass is super durable and heat-resistant that able to handle repeated heat cycles without cracking under pressure.
You'll find glass bowls in all sorts of shapes and sizes, from simple slides to intricate works of art.
However, glass is fragile. If your bowl is dropped or knocked around, there is a good chance it could crack or break.
Quartz: Quartz takes everything you like about glass and dials up the performance. That said, quartz is still brittle as glass.
Metal: Metal bowls are practically indestructible, so if you're prone to dropping things, they might be a good option. They also heat up quickly, travel well, and clean up easily.
But there’s a caveat: metal tends to alter flavor, especially under high heat. So if flavor's your priority, look elsewhere.
Ceramic: Ceramic bowls offer a unique aesthetic and can retain heat well, not interfere with the taste of your herb, leading to a smoother smoking experience.
However, they can be more fragile than glass, so handle them with care. And because most ceramic bowls are handmade, quality can vary.
Silicone: A silicone-wrapped bowl, usually a glass core encased in a rubbery sleeve, offers some of the best impact resistance on the market.
Silicone bowls are flexible and virtually unbreakable, making them great for travel or outdoor adventures.
4. Design and Style
Sometimes, just the look and feel of a bowl can be the deciding factor.
Bowls come in all sorts of crazy designs, colors, and shapes, so they can be a great way to express your personality or show off your favorite character.
You can choose a perfect one that will accent the design of your favorite bong and suits your preferences.
5. Added Features
Some bong bowls come with added features that improve functionality: Screens – Prevent ash and debris from pulling through, keeping hits clean. Handles & Grips – Help with easy removal, especially when the bowl gets hot. Multi-Hole Designs – Improve airflow, ensuring even burning and smoother pulls.
6. Budget
Bong bowls comes in a whole range of prices from a cheap $10 up to intricate one that can cost hundreds.
Whether you're looking for an affordable option or ready to splurge, Find a bowl that is comfortable and works for you.
What is the best bowl for bong?
When purchasing a bong bowl, make sure to ensure that the quality is high to ensure a smooth smoking experience.
Borosilicate Glass bong bowls are preferred for their durability, heat resistance, aesthetic appeal and ease of clean.
Borosilicate glass is non-porous, flavor-neutral, and able to handle repeated heat cycles without cracking under pressure.
How to Pack a Bowl for a Bong?
Once you’ve acquired the best bowl for your needs, it’s time to pack it with flower.
To start, Use a weed grinder to create a loose grind, but don’t break them down too small.
Load the flower into your bowl and gently pack it in, but not so tightly as to stop airflow, or you won’t be able to inhale the smoke.
As an optional step, you can also place a screen under the flower before packing to avoid inhaling plant debris.
How to Smoke a Bong Bowl?
After packing your bowl, it’s time to light it. Most people use a BIC or Zippo lighter to do the job, and others opt for hemp wick because butane can affect the smoke.
If you use hemp wick, light the end of the string and use the embering tip to light the bowl.
Light the flower, and inhale, bringing the smoke into the water chamber. This may create a “cherry” ember and stay lit, allowing another hit to be drawn without relighting the flower.
Can I Put Concentrates Into My Bong Bowl?
Due to their high concentration of cannabinoids, bowl topping with concentrates will intensify your overall cannabis experience.
However, We would advise not do that as it won't get you as good as a dab rig, because it is not the right temp - This higher temp will burn off the terpenes and cause waste.
Additionally, Don't heat the bong bowl with a Butane torch as this extreme heat exposure can crack the glass. Instead, always use a quartz nail or banger to dab, or vaporize concentrates for inhaling .
How to Clean a Bong Bowl?
Cleaning bong bowl regularly keeps your airflow smooth and your flavor fresh.
Step 1: Remove the bowl from your bong and Put it in the Ziploc bag and add enough isopropyl alcohol to cover it completely.
Step 2: Seal the bag and soak it for at least 30 minutes.
Step 3: After soaking, use a cleaning brush or q-tip to remove any remaining residue. Rinse it thoroughly with clean water.
Step 4: Let it to air dry completely before reassembling your bong.
When to Use a Bong Adapter?
If you have a bong that doesn’t match your bowl you can use a bong adapter.
Bong adapters provide the option to use a wrong-diameter bong/bowl combination. However, you still need to make sure that the adapter you get fits both items.
You can do this by measuring the pipes that connect both parts. The bong part of the adapter should be male in most cases, whereas the bowl often needs a female part to connect to the adapter or bong.
