What is a quartz banger?
A Quartz Banger is a type of dab nail made from quartz crystal that can be attached to a dab rig for vaporizing concentrates.
Dab nails made from this material are known for their purity, offering exceptional flavor and an ability to withstand high temperatures.
They come in a variety of shapes, sizes and styles to cater to different preferences and dabbing styles.
How Does a Quartz Banger Work?
Quartz banger is designed to be heated, usually with a butane torch, until it reaches a high temperature.
At this point, the banger is allowed to cool slightly, and a small amount of concentrate is placed on the banger and vaporized.
In most cases, a quartz banger is used with a carb capor terp pearls for better vaporization results.
Benefits of Quartz Bangers
There are many benefits of quartz bangers that make them the most popular type of dab nail:
1. Pure flavor
Quartz is a inert material that stays neutral at heat, so the quartz banger won’t affect the taste of your dabs, allowing you to get the full flavors of the terpenes in your concentrates, especially at lower temps.
With quartz bangers you only taste your concentrates and never the nail itself.
2. Durability & Heat Resistance
One shortcoming of glass bangers is that they can break or shatter easily when exposed to high heat.
Quartz is highly resistant to thermal shock, meaning it can withstand rapid heating and cooling without cracking—an essential trait for a component exposed to extreme temperatures.
Quartz bangers can work well for years that ensures long-lasting performance and saves you money on replacements.
3. Powerful Heat Retention
Quartz heats up quickly but loses heat slowly, which gives you a consistent window to hit your dab just right.
4. Hassle-Free Cleaning
The non-porous nature of quartz prevents residue build-up, simplifying maintenance. They are easy to clean with an ISO alcohol and a Q-tip and are less likely to become a hazy color.
5. Perfect Match
Due to its transparent nature, Quartz Bangers fit in wonderfully with glass dab rigs and are more aesthetically pleasing than titanium or ceramic bangers.
Different Types of quartz bangers
Quartz Bangers come in various shapes and sizes to cater to different preferences and dabbing styles. Some popular types include:
1. Flat Top Bangers
These are the most common type, which have a level top for placing your various carb cap. ideally leaving it there so you can focus on inhaling.
The flat rim allows for a tight seal with carb caps, helping retain heat and vapor.
2. Angled Top Bangers
These feature a sloped design that helps direct vapor flow to the back of the banger. They’re often paired with directional airflow caps.
The slant design also makes the banger look sleek, stylish and provides the proper heat retention for small and medium-sized dabs.
However, the angle requires the right carb cap to fit, and you have to hold the cap to keep it in place.
3. Thermal Bangers
These have a double-walled chamber to hold heat longer, great for those who want longer dabbing sessions.
Thermal bangers work like a double-paned window. Their built-in inner bowl creates an insulated air pocket which aids heat retention.
4. Terp Slurpers
These comes with a bottom dish and slitted columns to promote airflow and surface area, ensuring that every little bit is vaporized.
Small slits at the bottom of the tube let airflow continuously flow as the user inhales, creating a vacuum that constantly “percolates” the concentrates.
5. Opaque Bottom Bangers
Featuring a solid white base, Opaque bottom bangers are great at retaining focused heat in the bottom of the banger instead of distributing it to the sides, which heats faster and retains heat longer.
6. Core Reactor Banger
A core reactor quartz banger has a similar design to a traditional quartz banger, but it includes an extra piece of solid quartz in the bottom of the banger bucket.
This added quartz increase the contact surface with your concentrates that offers better heat retention and vaporization.
How to Choose the Right Quartz Banger?
The compatibility is crucial when choosing the right quartz banger for your dabbing session.
1. Joint Size
Each quartz banger has a joint size that must match your dab rig.
The three most common joint sizes are 10mm, 14mm, and 18mm.
10mm: Ideal for smaller, portable rigs, this joint size is perfect for those who prefer low heat and compact setups.
14mm: A popular size that offers versatility, working well with a wide variety of rigs.
18mm: Best for larger rigs, this joint size is often favored by those who enjoy larger, more intense hits.
2. Joint Gender
You also need to identify whether your rig has a male or female joint. A female joint is recessed while male joints stick out.
If your rig has a male joint, you must use nails with a female joint, and if your rig's joint is female, your nail must be male.
3. Joint Angle
If the joint on your dab rig is slanted at an angle, opt for a 45° banger so that you can still dab on a flat surface.
On the other hand, if the joint on your rig is straight (vertical), choose a 90° banger.
4. Thickness
Quartz bangers can vary in thickness, with the most common being 2mm, 3mm, and 4mm thickness. The thickness of your banger impacts how well it retains heat and how quickly it reaches the desired temperature.
Thicker bangers are known to provide longer-lasting heat, ideal for lower temperature dabs that preserve the flavor of your concentrate.
5. Style and Design
There are a multitude of quartz bangers on the market.look at the style and design you want.
From basic flat-tops and efficient color-changing thermals to intricate terp slurpers, each design can enhance your dabbing experience uniquely.
How to Use a Quartz Banger?
Using a quartz banger is straightforward, but precision is key for the perfect dab. Here is a step-by-step guide.
Step 1: Heat the quartz banger with a butane torch until it’s glowing. It takes about 20-40 seconds depending on thickness.
Step 2: Let it cool for about 30-60 seconds. This gives you the ideal temp range (~500-600°F) for full flavor and smooth hits.
Use a dab timer or infrared temp gun can help to avoid guessing and achieve the right temperature for dabs.
Step 3: Use the dab tool to place a small amount of concentrates into the banger.
Once the concentrate hits the heated banger, it should begin to vaporize almost immediately.
Step 4: Cover the banger with a carb cap to control airflow and retain heat.
Step 5: Inhale and enjoy. Remove the cap and clean the banger when you are done.
How Long to Heat Quartz Banger?
Heat a quartz banger for 20-60 seconds, depending on thickness; thin bangers need 20-30 seconds, thicker ones need a full minute.
Once the quartz begins to glow, remove the torch. Now it's time to wait for about 40-50 seconds to let it cool down before you take your dab to prevent burning your concentrate.
You'll want to aim for temperatures between 500 and 650°F for the perfect low-temp hit.
If the eyeball method is too inconsistent for you, you can use a infrared temp gun to help you find the perfect temperature to hit your dab.
If all else fails, go for an e-nail for precise temperature control.
How to Clean a Quartz Banger?
Keeping your quartz banger clean is crucial for optimal performance and flavor.
The most efficient way to keep your quartz banger clean is to give it a quick clean after every dab and give it more thorough cleanings about every couple of weeks.
Daily Cleaning: After each dab, when the quartz banger is still warm but not too hot, Use a Q-tip dipped in iso alcohol to swab out excess residue in the banger.
Deep Cleaning: Remove the quartz banger from your rig. Place Quartz Banger in a glass of 91% isopropyl alcohol, Let it soak for 30 minutes or more to dissolve any stubborn residue.
Remove the banger from Iso alcohol and rinse it with warm water. Dry the banger completely with a clean cloth or let it air dry.
Can I Put Stickers on My Quartz Banger?
Definitely not recommend. You'll always need to heat your quartz banger with a torch and clean your quartz banger with isopropyl alcohol which will ruin any stickers it touches.
The stickers will make any time you use and clean it much more of a headache than is worth it.
When heated to extremely high temperatures (around 800°F or above), quartz mouthpieces will glow red.
However, brand-new transparent quartz mouthpieces may not emit such a vivid red glow as thinner or older mouthpieces, and may not glow red at all.
To tell whether a banger is made of glass or quartz, tap it.
Glass produces a higher-pitched, tinkling sound, while quartz produces a duller, lower-pitched tone.
Alternatively, you can heat it until it is red hot and then drop it into water. If it shatters, it is glass; if it withstands the shock, it is quartz.
