What is a Bong? and How Does it Work?
A bong is a water pipe used to smoke cannabis. It filters and cools smoke, providing a smoother, less harsh hit.
They’ve been around for centuries. The word bong comes from the Thai word “Buang”. Buangs are bamboo bongs, highly popular in Asia.
Today’s water bongs look a lot more complicated than a simple bamboo tube, but they all come down to the same basic process.
It typically consists of a bowl where the cannabis is placed, a stem (tube) that extends into the water, and a mouthpiece for inhaling the smoke.
When the cannabis is light, the smoke travels through the stem and is diffused through the water, which helps to remove impurities and provide a smoother smoking experience.
Benefit of Using a Water Bong
Cooler, Cleaner Smoke: When compared to dry pipes, and joints, Bongs are a much healthier smoking method because they filter out harmful chemicals and cool the smoke through water. This feature makes for cooler, purer smoke.
Because of the clearer, purer inhale, you're less likely to cough when using a bong compared to dry smoking methods. Coughing less can make your smoking session more enjoyable and comfortable.
Big Hits: The big chamber and, cooler smoke means bigger hits. And, bigger hits lead to more intense highs.
Aesthetically Pleasing: Generally made out of glass, water pipes come in a wide variety of sizes, shapes, colors, and designs. They can be customizable to their users interests and tastes and can be an excellent addition to any glass collections.

Their wide, sturdy base minimizes the risk of tipping over, while the spacious beaker design allows for more water, enhancing filtration and cooling the smoke. This results in smoother, more enjoyable hits.
2. Straight Tube Bongs
An iconic vertical look, the straight tube is made from a single or couple pieces of glass tubing.
The simple design of a straight tube bong gives the user more control over the size of each pull, and the smoke produced inside the chamber is much easier to clear than a voluminous beaker bong.
Straight tube bongs are also generally easier to clean. However, the smaller base makes straight tubes less stable and more prone to accidents.
3. Recycler Bongs
A recycler bong recycles smoke and water in its multiple chambers without interruption.
Its movement makes the smoke smoother and cooler, less harsh on the throat and lungs.
These versatile water pipes can be used for both dry herbs and concentrates. However, the intricate designs can make these water pipes more expensive.
4. Percolator Bongs
A percolator bong contains one or more percolator, which helps to break down the smoke into smaller bubbles.
Thousands of water bubbles create more surface area for the smoke to glide across and disperse, which also allows for heat transfer.
This additional filtration cools the smoke more effectively, resulting in a smoother hit.
Percs come in a variety of types, such as tree percs, honeycomb percs, and inline percs, each offering their unique benefits and aesthetics.
5. Gravity Bongs
Gravity bongs are a special type of cannabis smoking pipe that use air pressure and water to draw smoke.

Factors to Consider When Buying a Bong or Water Pipe
When choosing a bong, consider factors like size, material, percolators, cleaning, durability, and portability to find the right one for you.
These aspects will impact the amount of smoke it holds, its maintenance, and the smoking experience.
1. Size
The size of the bong affects both the smoking experience and its portability.
Larger bongs provide cooler and smoother hits due to the greater distance the smoke travels, which allows more time to cool.
Portable and discreet, mini bongs (8 Inches or Smaller) are perfect for smokers who need a compact piece that’s easy to carry and store.
Offering a balance between portability and performance, medium bongs are the go-to choice for most users.

The look and design of your bong might be important to you. Choose one that resonates with your personal style.
3. Material
Bongs are typically made from glass, silicone, ceramic, wood, or acrylic. Each has it's own benefit and disadvantages.
Glass bongs, like those offered at Lookah, are popular for their purity, offering a clean taste without affecting the flavor of the weed.
4. Percolation

5. Joint Size
If you’re looking to expand your collection of bowls, or if you want to be prepared for future upgrades, The joint size is a significant factor to consider while choosing a bong.
The most common joint sizes for bongs are 10mm, 14mm, and 18mm, and the size of the bong’s joint corresponds with the bowl piece size needed.
Additionally, Bong joints come in male and female versions, with female bong joints requiring male accessories to fit, and vice versa.
6. Ease of Clean
Bongs need to be cleaned regularly to prevent the buildup of resin and bacteria.
Cleaning can be a hassle, but Some designs are easier to clean than others.
7. Additional Features
Some of the best bongs come with extra features that can totally elevate your smoking experience.
Ice catchers: They are indents on either side of the bong neck, hold ice to further cool the smoke,
Splash guards: The splash guard helps prevent splashes while inhaling. It Includes holes so smoke can still pass through, but the top is domed so the water falls back into the chamber.
Diffused Downstem: A bong without a downstem is just a bottle with a hole. A good diffuser downstem creates tons of tiny bubbles for ultimate smoke filtration.
Ash Catchers: Ash Catcher is an accessory for keeping your bong clean and smooth to use. It acts as a barrier between the bowl and the water chamber, catching ash before it enters the main body of the bong.
8. Brand Reputation
Finally, consider the brand and reputation of the company producing the bong. A reputable brand will ensure that the bong is of high quality and lasts long.
What is the Best Type of Glass Bong?
The best type of glass bong is made of borosilicate glass, which is extremely heat resistant and can handle extreme temperatures without being damaged. It's a tell-tale material of top quality bongs.
How Much Do Bongs Cost?
Bongs can cost anywhere from $30 to $200 or even more. The more you pay for a bong the smoother, cleaner, and tastier the bong rip is!
The cheapest bong might seem like a bargain, but if it's made from low-quality materials (Acrylic or Silicone) and doesn't deliver a great smoking experience, it’s not worth it and is not advisable to buy.
Typically $100 - $200 is considered a good investment. Bongs in that price range are usually made out of good borosilicate glass material, and will offer quality percolators and function.
Expensive glass bongs costs $200 and Beyond, usually feature artistic designs, hand-blown by a famous glass artist or at least made in the United States.
Do Bongs Smell?
Yes, bongs can still produce a noticeable smell, but they significantly reduce the intensity of the smell compared to other smoking methods like a joint or hand pipe.
This is because the water filtration system in bongs traps some of the smoke particles and odors.
How To Clean A Bong?
Ideally, rinse it out after each session and give it a proper deep clean once a week.
Regular cleaning makes sure that each hit is as fresh and flavorful as possible, free from any lingering residue or unwanted buildup.
Here’s instructions on how to deep clean your glass, metal or ceramic bong.
Cleaning Materials needed: You don't need a fancy cleaning solution to keep your glass or ceramic bong clean. These household ingredients will get the job done!
Supplies will include: Isopropyl alcohol (preferably 91% or higher), Coarse salt (Epsom salt), Paper towels, pipe cleaners (for hard-to-reach spots), Ziplocks, Rubber bands/hair ties.
Step 1: Removing any detachable parts, such as the bowl, downstem, and percolators. This will make the bong cleaning process much easier.
Rinse the detachable pieces with warm water. Give each component a thorough rinse to remove any loose debris. This initial rinse will help prepare the pieces for the deep cleaning to come.
Step 2: Place the detachable parts like bowl and downstem in separate bags, add about a tablespoon of salt and enough isopropyl to cover it.
Seal the bags, give each one a good shake for roughly 30 seconds, and let them soak for a while.
The salt will act as an abrasive, while the alcohol will dissolve the tar and resin buildup.
Step 3: Pour the rubbing alcohol and salt cleaning solution into the bong until it's half to two-thirds full.
Cover the openings of the bong with your hands, fashion covers out of plastic bags and rubber bands, or rubber stoppers to seal them.
This will prevent the salt and alcohol from spilling out while you shake the bong.
Step 4: Shake the bong so that the salt and alcohol mixture cleans the interior of the piece.
Shaking creates friction between the salt and the interior of the pieces, which will remove buildup.
If necessary, repeat this step a few times until the inside of your bong is clean.
After letting the bowl and downstem soak for a long time, shake it again and rinse with hot water.
Step 5: Wash the bong and its parts with warm water, using the bottle brush and pipe cleaner to remove the residue from the hard-to-reach places.
It's best not to use boiling hot water because this could bust the glass.
Step 6: Use paper towels to dry each piece and bong body thoroughly. Make sure that each piece is dry before reassembling the bong.
Step 7: Put the pieces back together, making sure that they are snug and secure.
Store it standing upright in an out-of-the-way location where it won't get bumped, jostled, or broken.
How to Use a Bong?
If you're new to using a bong, it can be a bit intimidating. But with a little practice, you'll soon be able to use one like a pro.
Here are some steps on how to use a bong.
Step 1: Add water to your bong, filling it just above the main percolator or the bottom of the downstem, but not so high that hinders airflow.
Test the water level by taking a pull. If you get water in your mouth, remove some water until it’s right.
Step 2: Grind your dry herb and pack it into the bowl.
Make sure it’s not too tightly packed, as this can restrict airflow.
Step 3: Hold the bong with one hand and the lighter with the other hand.
Light your bowl while inhaling through the mouthpiece, allowing the bong to fill with smoke.
When the chamber is full of smoke, remove the bowl from the downstem and inhale the smoke into your lungs, ideally until you “clear” the neck of smoke.
Hold the smoke in your lungs for a few seconds, then exhale slowly.
When Smoking, take slow, deep breaths to avoid inhaling too much smoke at once, and don't hold your breath for too long.
How Much Water Should You Put in a Bong?
The amount of water needed in a bong is just enough for the perc or bottom of the downstem to be completely submerged in water by a half inch.
This allows the smoke to filter through effectively, cooling and filtering it without hindering airflow.

Yes, you can.If your bong already has a downstem for a regular bowl, you just need to buy a 45° banger and a torch.
Yes, bongs provide some filtration. Smoke passes through the bowl and downstem into the chamber, which cools it and removes some harmful particles like tar and carcinogens.
Some bongs also feature recyclers or percolators, which offer even better cooling and filtration for a cleaner, smoother inhale.
Bongs can be costly due to their craftsmanship and the use of premium materials.
Glassblowing, the main method for making glass bongs, is an ancient skill that takes years to master.
Each bong is carefully shaped, colored, and molded, making it unique and often rare. High-end glass bongs can be considered works of art, reflecting the glassblower’s expertise and creativity.
Most bongs are much larger than a bubbler with more space between the bowl and the mouthpiece, which allows the user to take larger hits than with a bubbler.
A bubbler pipe is smaller, handheld pipe that only have fixed downstems.
If you have multiple sessions in a day (more than two or three), I'd recommend rinsing it at the end of the day.
If it's just one session every few days, then you can probably go a week.
