How To Use a Bong As a Dab Rig?

In the world of cannabis consumption, enthusiasts often explore different methods to enhance their experience.

One such curiosity is whether a bong, designed primarily for smoking dried flowers, can be adapted for dabbing concentrates.

In this guide, we'll take an in-depth look at the feasibility of using a bong as a dab rig and its possible drawbacks.

You can use the bong as a dab rig, but it's not ideal.

To use a bong to smoke marijuana, you'll need to secure a suitable dab peg or concentrate tray to the downstem or bowl area, ensuring a seal to prevent leakage.

However, there are some drawbacks to doing so that can detract from your overall experience.

Using a Bong for Dabs

If you decide to smoke marijuana with a bong, the main challenge is mounting the nails

Many nails are female joints and will not fit naturally on the bong of a female joint.

There are a couple of ways to get around this, though.

The easiest way to ensure that the nail is compatible with the bong is to purchase a male-jointed nail that is the same as the bong's joint.

For example, banger nails are usually male joints and work well regardless of the angle, whereas with bong nails the angle can sometimes be off.

If you already have female joint nails and still want to use them with a bong, then you can purchase an adapter.

A male-to-female adapter will fit over the joint of the bong and provide another male joint for the female nail, which is the best option for situations where the joints are different sizes.

For example, if the bong joint is 18 mm and the nail is 14 mm, you can purchase an 18 mm to 14 mm male-to-male adapter.

Universal nails are a marvelous existence.

These awesome devices are available for male and female joints, as well as for multiple joint sizes, and if you plan to use nails with multiple fittings (including dab rigs and bongs) regularly, the universal nail is the perfect solution.

Once you've solved the problem of securing the nail, the rest is relatively simple.

When smoking marijuana, it is recommended to use less water than you would for a regular spliff and to avoid some common mistakes.

You will still need a torch or e-nail to heat the nail, other than that it's pretty easy to understand.

Why Not to Use a Bong as a Dab Rig?

1. Flavor Compromise:

The taste of cannabis concentrates differs significantly from that of smoked flowers.

Mixing the resins from both can adulterate the flavor of your concentrate, making it less enjoyable.

2. Reclaim Contamination:

Dab rigs accumulate reclaim, a concentrated residue left behind after vaporization.

This reclaim can be reclaimed (cleaned and reused) for various purposes.

However, when flower resin mixes with the reclaim, it can tarnish its flavor and purity, making it less valuable for further consumption or infusion.

3. Cleanliness Challenges:

Flower resin is notorious for being difficult to clean, containing charred particles that contribute to a burnt taste in dirty pipes

Using the same bong for both flowers and concentrates can lead to a buildup of a thick, gooey mixture that's challenging to remove, affecting both flavor and hygiene.

4. Maintenance Burden:

To preserve the flavor and cleanliness of your devices, frequent cleaning is necessary.

Mixing flowers and concentrates in the same bong can significantly increase the cleaning effort, potentially discouraging regular maintenance.

Conclusion

While it's technically possible to use a bong as a dab rig, the drawbacks far outweigh the benefits.

Maintaining separate devices for flowers and concentrates ensures optimal flavor, cleanliness, and ease of maintenance.

As a seasoned cannabis consumer, I highly recommend investing in dedicated pieces for each type of consumption to fully appreciate the nuances and flavors of your favorite products.
